Battalion prepares for action

BRAMPTON - The hockey season is just around the corner for fans of the Ontario Hockey League and the Brampton Battalion.The troops will open camp next Wednesday, August 27 with three days of tests and training before breaking camp and getting into its exhibition season.The Batalion hopefuls will register at the Powerade Centre next Wednesday afternoon with a players meeting slated for 1 p.m. That will be followed by rigorous fitness testing and team medicals to round out the opening day of camp.The prospects and veterans will hit the ice the following day for morning practice and an afternoon intrasquad contest, slated to begin at 4 p.m.It will be the same routine on Saturday with each of the two teams getting in a morning practice before a 4 p.m. intrasquad match-up.Players will get one last chance to impress coach Stan Butler and his staff on Sunday morning with a final intrasquad contest slated for 9 a.m.The staff will meet with the players following Sunday morning's skate with successful candidates gearing up for an exhibition tilt aganist the Rangers in Kitchener on Sunday, August 31.Local fans will get a chance to see the troops in action at the Powerade Centre the following afternoon when the Ranges make a return visit to Brampton for a 2 p.m. contest.Brampton will also play Guelph in a home-and-home set with the two sides squaring off in Brampton on Thursday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. and in Guelph the following night.The troops are slated to wrap up the pre-season with a home game against Owen Sound on Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m.Action kicks off for real when Ottawa visits for a 7:30 p.m. game on Friday, Sept. 19.
