BRAMPTON - The Brampton Lions relinquished a late goal as they lost 3-2 to the North York Astros in Canadian Soccer League play last Friday night at Victoria Park Stadium.
The game was a contest between the two teams battling for second place in the National Division. The loss left the Lions with a 4-5-5 record for third place with 17 points while the Astros picked up three points and lead Brampton by six points, each team has played 14 games. The Trois-Rivieres Attak lead the way with a 9-1-4 record and 31 points and are unbeaten in 13 games.
On Friday night Brampton took a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute with forward Daniel Nascimento scoring his league-leading 12th goal of the season. That one stood up through the first half.
North York tied the contest on a goal by Martin Artale at 54 minutes. The visitors took the lead just one minute later with Franco Lalli scoring.
Nordo Gooden equalized things for the Lions as he scored at 81 minutes to make it 2-2. However Brampton went down to a heart-breaking defeat with striker Selvin Lammie scoring from the penalty spot in the 88th minute to wrap up the three points for the Astros.
While the Lions are trying to catch North York for second they must also be wary of the teams behind, St. Catharies Wolves have 16 points with a game-in-hand on Brampton while TFC Academy also has 16 points in 14 games.
Brampton and North York hook up once again on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Victoria Park.
