Two Brampton firefighters who competed in the July 2008 Can-Am Police-Fire Games in Saskatoon, Sask. made the municipality proud when they returned home with two gold medals, one silver and one bronze.

Firefighters Drew Huerter and Shayne Coon travelled west for 10 days in July to compete in badminton and shooting categories against other emergency services workers from across the nation.

According to Huerter, the two local men travelled the farthest distance to get to the Olympic-style games that run ever other year.

He said he was proud to bring home the gold medal for the men's open singles in badminton- especially since he went into the contest not knowing what sort of competition he was up against.

"It's a little strange," he said, "because you are playing against people you have never seen before. You have absolutely no clue (what the competition is like)."

Coon, who could not be reached for comment, brought home three medals: a gold in skeet shooting, a silver in a team shooting event and a bronze in overall shooting.

His first experience with the games was so positive and rewarding, Huerter said he has intentions to enter the 2010 event, as well as the next World Police-Fire Games and the next World Firefighter Games.

This time around, however, he'd like to throw his hat in the ring for the toughest competition alive category- a combat-style challenge.

And, other local firefighters are eager to jump on board with him.

"I've talked to a few guys and we might even have a team for next time," he said.

The Can-Am Police-Fire Games holds 50 different events, ranging from cooking to hockey, said Huerter, and anyone who works in emergency services is eligible to compete.
