Time to put the freeze on ice cream truck sales
Sunday August 17 2008

Further to the complaints you received by Brampton citizens over the ice cream trucks, I have one more to add. I have lived in my home in Brampton for nearly 32 years. The ice cream trucks have bothered me considerably for many years as well. Our board of directors voted to not allow the ice cream vendors onto our crescent and have given the vendors a Trespass Order to stay off of the crescent with a copy going to Peel Regional Police.

There are large signs on our street stating that no commercial vehicles are allowed and trespassers will be prosecuted. The same ice cream vendors who were given the Trespass Order ignore the order and signs and appear sometimes every day while laughing in our faces. These vendors are portrayed as 'heroes' who help us stay cool in the summer.

I would like to say that they break the law while causing war in neighbourhoods and walk away with a huge profit for themselves. If you take away the money they make, they wouldn't help anyone stay cool. Can you believe it has gone so far in our neighbourhood that a neighbour was punched and assaulted and thrown down a flight of cement stairs over the ice cream trucks? During the winter when the ice cream vendors are not around, everyone is peaceful and helping each other shovel snow from their driveways.

As a homeowner I find it hard to believe that I have to look for another home just because these vendors get away with disrupting the peace. I have submitted long lists of dates and times, vendor plate numbers, submitted photographs and more to Brampton bylaw enforcement. I have written many letters to the Mayor of Brampton. I have had the police out to my home several times and submitted long letters to them about the ice cream vendors disturbing the peace.

In the end, the vendors just laugh in our face and continue selling in front of our home.

Shouldn't every citizen be allowed to live in peace and quiet ?

Do these vendors have the right to turn a quiet, peaceful residential street into their own commercial zone with blasting music and crowds like a carnival? In my opinion they are not heroes but rather lawbreakers that ignore trespass orders while stealing profit from local vendors.
