BRAMPTON - The effort to "build a culture of conservation" across Ontario seems to be paying off for Hydro One and Hydro One Brampton as the electricity providers close in on the installation of half a million smart meters.
Mandated by Queen's Park, Hydro One and Hydro One Brampton are in the process of installing smart meters in the homes and small businesses of their combined 1.4 million customers.
A smart meter tracks how much electricity a household uses, and provides key information to help customers manage energy.
In Ontario, all homes and businesses will be equipped with smart meters by the end of the decade.
"Ontario is regarded as a leader in smart metering around the world, and about 1.4 million homes and small businesses across the province already have a smart meter," said Gerry Phillips, Ontario energy minister. "A smart grid could build on that initiative and complement the renewal taking place in Ontario's electricity sector."
In addition to meter deployment, Hydro One officials say the company is moving closer to realizing the vision of a "smart grid".
